Hi all,
I was downloading part of an audio book from project gutenberg, and somewhere below the mirror link, and the biblio link, there is a link that says, p2p. I entered on it to try and find out what it was,but all I got out of it was some sort of code jibberish, or that's what it sounded like to me, so I was just wondering, what's p2p?

It means person to person either chat or file sharing.

hmm, let me do this a bit more clear. P2p means peer to peer, and its a connection between two computers that ehrhr, oy, let me see. well, they share information when connected. it can be sending or receiving information.

Well if we want to get mor technical even and down t the core of it, yes p2p means peer 2 peer and the idea is this. Traditioally all the files sit on oe computer and you download the file from that comkputer to your computer, this means that e.g. only 3 people could download the file at a time without the speed slowing down. Now while you are downloading a bigger and bigger part of the file is now sitting on your hard drive write? So someone came up with the idea that if someone else is trying to download the file why not get part of the file from yor computer (the part you have downloaded) rather than the main computer (also called server) that would speed up the process right because while you are getting the file from computer A computer C is getting the file from you instead of waiting. Then the concept epanded a bit and now p2p is basically software that looks for all computers hooked up to the network that have partsf the file you are looking for and also can tell wich parts are on whic computer, then it ges out and gets differnt parts from diifferent computers to yours until it's got the entire file, there are some smart algorithms developed so that the computer can make sure it got everything. This greatly speeds up the transfer of data since you're using all availible computers instead of just one. That's the idea behind p2p.

I sort of got an idea of this when I read a help file on the download page. Sorry I wasted everyones time, and thanks for the response,

It can also mean pay to play as well I believe. I have seen it used in that context as well.

well, I think on the gutenberg site, it means peer to peer, but thanks anyway,
